Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is one of the largest and busiest airports in the American Southwest one of the 15 busiest airports in the world. Established in 1928 with one operational runway, Sky Harbor was expanded following World War II. The airport's Terminal 1 opened in 1952 and was torn down in 1990 following an extensive expansion.
Over 120 aircraft gates are located in Terminals 2, 3 and 4. The Terminal 1 designation was retired when the original building was torn down. Terminal 2 is the smallest, with nine gates, while Terminal 3 has 17 gates. The largest terminal is Terminal 4, also called the Barry M. Goldwater Terminal, is the largest one at Sky Harbor, with more than 90 gates and handling about 80% of the airport's traffic. Three northern concourses handle flights from US Airways, which uses Sky Harbor as one of its major hubs. The three southern concourses serve Southwest Airlines. International flights are located in the northeastern B concourse.
British Airways operates the only non-stop flight to Europe from Sky Harbor to London-Heathrow. US Airways and Aeroméxico Connect have routes to Mexico, while US Airways, Air Canada, and WestJet offer flights to several cities in Canada. Domestic airlines serving Sky Harbor include United, American, Delta, Hawaiian and JetBlue.
Sky Harbor bills itself as America's Friendliest Airport®. The airport has a staff of navigator volunteers who provide customer service support. A free motorist assistance program helps travelers find their vehicle if they have forgotten where they have left their vehicle.
Other services include free public Wi-Fi in all airport terminals. The airport is handicapped accessible with curb cuts, automatic doors and elevators, ramped access to lobbies and gates and wheelchair accessible telephones, ATMs, restrooms and drinking fountains.
